Forcibly Displaced People Network (FDPN) is proud to announce that we have partnered with Community Refugee Sponsorship Australia (CRSA) to facilitate the community sponsorship of LGBTIQ+ refugees.
Why focus on LGBTIQ+ refugees in community sponsorship?
LGBTIQ+ refugees often face discrimination, barriers to employment, and high rates of gender-based violence. These experiences are common both before seeking safety and in Australia. The 2023 FDPN national survey highlighted the challenges faced by this cohort, including isolation due to a lack of support from ethnic or LGBTIQ+ communities.
LGBTIQ+ refugees are the government priority for resettlement through community sponsorship but have unique needs in settlements.
Sponsoring an LGBTIQ+ refugee through the Community Refugee Integration and Settlement Pilot (CRISP) provides an opportunity to support the rights and empowerment of displaced individuals. By working in partnership with the FDPN, we can ensure that the settlement experiences of LGBTIQ+ refugees in Australia are enhanced, and a more inclusive society is created.
How will LGBTIQ+ community sponsorship work?
Sponsoring a refugee involves offering support and assistance throughout their first year of the settlement process. By extending a helping hand, you play a vital role in providing a safe environment for LGBTIQ refugees to rebuild their lives.
But you will not be alone! When you tell us you want to support an LGBTIQ+ refugee you get double support (support from CRSA and support from us FDPN). We offer a hand for you to navigate through the process and CRSA manages the program that can help us bring LGBTIQ+ people in need of protection to safety.
